WHEN REALITY BROKE DOWN
The impact of the pandemic on our mental health
This year the pandemic has made us agree that there is nothing more important than health. Therefore, many people have started to eat vegetables, do exercise watching YouTube videos and some have even stopped smoking. We do not conceive the idea of living well without a healthy body. However, once again, when we think about health, we do not take into account the role of our emotions in our lives. Covid-19 is another physical disease that overshadows mental disorders, such as depression and anxiety.
Naturally, we tend to worry more about someone who has fever o coughs frequently. But we find it hard to comprehend the pain of someone who is not able to get up from bed or the anguish that is provoked by having the same thoughts for hours. This trend is even reflected on the attention that governments pay to mental health in their countries. None of them assigns the minimal budget recommended by the World Health Organization. Besides, in most of the countries, health insurances do not cover the cost of psychological or psychiatric treatments. While the consumption of anxiolytics increases in the region, the quantity of mental health professionals remains insufficient.
Although so far the studies have focused on how coronavirus affects our organs, it is also necessary to pay attention to the effects that it will leave in our minds. In this special edition of Salud con lupa, we try to do so by telling stories about how pandemic changed our reality abruptly: all of a sudden we are not able to console ourselves with a hug, children are no longer able to play during the breaks and we even lost the freedom to make plans. After eight months of shock, we must start to restore the cracks that the virus has been leaving among us.
